The hidden fees
I recently made an iPad app purchase which then produced an receipt that was sent to my email. But rather than being charged the $4.99, the total came to $5.31. I was really surprised to see that tax had been added and made me wonder if I had been charged tax for previous purchases, unbeknownst to me . It definitely didn’t sit well that I had to find this out after the fact. And while the...

agreed. hellokatie: when it’s somebody else doing the ranting/raving/venting for once and not me. Allows me to give back a little bit, ya know?

super club v4: Phoenix
In honor of Chinese new year and being adventuresome, I thought taking the super team out for some super dim sum would be interesting. Especially considering that I’ve come to realize the delicate palettes that many of my super clubbers appear to have.  In attendance were me, RD, Nicki, Brian, JB, Artman and Elise. Luckily we weren’t the only non-asians there. We were seated...

what I've learned in 2 months
1) No one knows what my job is 2) Denial is sad way to go through life - especially when you act like you know what you’re doing 3) Repeating things 3 times over doesn’t make it easier to understand 4) Giving someone a project and using the word “illuminate” means nothing 5) When someone asks for a deadline don’t say “well, there really isn’t...

grey.
I was warned that moving to a small, new company would have its challenges and I was prepared for those. But the situation I am in is nothing that I could have fathomed. Essentially I feel like everyday I am walking through a fog. Everything from the purpose of this team, to my role on it to the projects that I am given is grey — meaning there is no definition to any of it.  I’ve...

super club v3: Hopleaf
So with RD having left the country for four months and the Radabaugh’s having moved to the burbs…super club was kind of put on hold.  For this month’s installment we went holiday themed and went to a place near Andersonville. I added the soon to be Felter’s to the invite.  Dinner was good and we all came wearing a bit of our holiday cheer.

giving two weeks
1) sucks to do it when another team member beat you to the punch…talk about salt in a wound 2) should be handled like taking off a band-aid 3) is better when you have an understanding manager 4) sucks to do it over the phone but no time like the present 5) it’s official. Official start date with Translation is Nov 28 — 6 years to the day when I started with Omnicom.

junk mail.
This was an email I received this morning. After reading it I thought it was spam so I deleted it. Later today I got a call from Allstate Insurance. It was the representative of the girl who was in the accident that I was a witness to. Then it clicked. Stephanie was that girl: Hello, my name is Stephanie Martinez, on Saturday you took the time out of your life to do something that I...

oh and one more thing...
I decided to Chair an Education committee on the Chicago Creative Collective (4A’s Young Professionals Org). We had a recruitment event and I talked about the Education Committee and what my big vision is (note that to date, I have not actually executed anything as I’m only one month into this). All of these people came up to me, wanting to join so now I actually have to get my ass in...

two things...
1) I found out a week ago that a friend of mine has cancer. What was a cough that lingered turned out to be Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He’s 27. He works out religiously. He eats right (most of the time). And now he’s on chemo. 2) I use this mug at work almost daily. It’s blue and says Dundy Award Winner and has The Office logo on other other side. It comes in handy for oatmeal...

earning my credits in heaven.
If it’s a nice enough night, I’ll walk home. RD prefers that I not walk home when it’s dark out, let alone when it’s 11:30p. Sometimes I follow the rule… This night was not one of those… I had just left a meeting with my “mentees” and of the group of five that showed up, 3 of them were walking a bit. I joined them, honestly for the same reason that...

Sept 9, 2001 - May 1, 2011
I was a sophomore in college and my boyfriend at the time got a call from our friend, telling him to turn on the TV. What later became known as 9/11, was happening. And millions of people watched from the other end, witnessing an event that seemed too unbelievable to be true. Ten years later, and after a long Sunday night at the office, RD tells me that CNN.com says that the president will be...

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride
…figuratively speaking that is. How is that things seem to happen the way they do? You think you’re doing everything right (probably even more than you really have to) and then you see your dream being whisked away on someone else’s luck. Say hello to the queen for me, will ya? Cheerio.

speaking of clothing...
…I’m about two shakes from putting away my winter coat. Even if it is still 30 degrees. This is just getting ridiculous and i’m tired of schlepping it around.

dress to impress
I don’t wear skirts or dresses (namely flowy ones) very often largely because i feel naked and I can never tell if i’ve accidently tucked my backside into my tights, leaving all of my junk hanging out for everyone to see.  Today I am. And i’ve been battling static cling and the fear of flashing all day.

dream.
i was like a 12 yo girl, blonde, surfer who had her arm bit off by a shark. that part had already happened. so the dream took place like a year after the incident and i was playing in my front yard (in tx) and my front yard was the ocean and my friends were like “arent you scared of the sharks?” and say “no, i mean i can’t stay away from the water forever” so anyways...

How sad is it when one of the only luxuries in life is a hot shower.

this one is for the books.
I should have known today was going to be a disaster when I woke up at 3am, tossing and turning, chocking in my own clothes (not literally), rolling around in my sheets like a human burrito.  It took me another hour, stripping naked and moving to the couch before I was able to fall back asleep.  I find a way to get my exhausted body into work. Can I also mention that I have yet to figure out this...

Mr. Sandman has me sandbagged
I’ve come to realize that my sleep habits have done a complete 180. And not necessarily by choice. A few years ago, it was a rare occasion for me to be up past 10pm and to sleep later than 6am (on “school nights”, that is). Granted I was putting in 15-20 miles a week along the lakefront path, but even before then, I was always an early riser. These days however, I’m...

wakey, wakey
You know that scene in Dumb and Dumber where Llyod says “Hey, wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world….EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!” This is what RD’s alarm clock sounds like. Every morning, I want to shoot him. So last night he changes it to a more subtle crowing of a rooster. Both have given me near heart attacks.  If I wasn’t there he could easily sleep through...

Question of the day...
Is it worse to have things collect real dust or virtual dust? I’ve worked on countless projects that have never seen the light of day. I say virtual dust. (a picture of a dust bunny is just gross so i opted for a stuffed animal)

Had my first eye exam since grade school when they made you cover your eye with a cone shaped, paper cup. And I’m happy to report that I am still corrective lenses free.

Hello 2011.
I wasn’t quite ready for you but here you are. And here I am, another year older and another year wiser (kind of). Seeing as I’ve now entered the final year of my 20’s I’ve decided this is THE year. Not sure what that means just yet or how I’ll spend it but it’s going to be good. Maybe i’ll get a tattoo, another hole pierced or go on a binder with some...
